It's the last 2 days of competition at the Houston FTC World Championship! The matches are being livestreamed on Twitch.TV, and the results are online! We have teams in the top 15 of each division so come cheer them on! As of this posting in Franklin Division, Rise of Hephaestus is 14th, and The Ducks are 19th. In Jemison Division, Inspiration is 10th, Green.Griffins is 11th, and Shockwave is 33rd, but rankings are constantly changing!

LeBron James, Adriana Lima, and other celebrities are now appearing in ads that try to tell students the same message that FIRST tells us - in STEM fields, everyone can go pro! "In a spot launching during March Madness, we see NBA star LeBron James explaining that there are only around 2,880 professional football players, a mere 850 pro soccer players and 624 pro basketball players. And, amazingly, there are only 5,800 fashion models. New Orleans Saints quarterback Drew Brees, supermodel Adriana Lima and aging soccer star David Villa underline that there isn't a need for more of them. Instead, there are 9 million jobs in science, technology, engineering and mathematics." ... as explained in this CNET article: https://www.cnet.com/news/lebron-james-tells-kids-become-scientist-not-nba-player-verizon-ad/ In this "making of" video, we can see how often students want to be a pro celebrity but don't realize that STEM careers can be interesting and financially rewarding: The advertisements are to help promote the Innovative Learning Initiative and a grant program from the Verizon Foundation. The actual video ad sponsored by Verizon is here: If you've been in FIRST Robotics for the last couple of years, you may have run across this 2015 article by author and trainer Paul Smith about his first experience at a FRC championship. He highlighted 10 differences between robotics competition and sports competition, and FIRST came out smelling like a rose. Even if you've already read it, you should read it again - he added an update this year on the role of the family in FIRST which you'll probably agree with!
Top 10 Differences Between High School Sports and Robotics -- by Paul Smith For those interested in catching some our local teams' matches, here are the match schedules with our teams' matches highlighted for 10092 Green.Griffins, 9441 Syndicate, 8471 The Ducks, and 4216 Rise of Hephaestus. They've just taken a break for lunch up in Tacoma, but they will re-start at 1:00pm with match 31 on Olympic Division and match 29 on Cascade Division. The grayed out matches have already been played, and progress has been about 8 matches/hour. They'll be competing from 1-6:30pm Sat, and 8:30-11am Sun, and then Alliance Selection will occur with Semi-Finals and Finals from 1-4pm on Sunday.
The links for schedule, videostreams, and match results are at FTCWest.org, or we have the links to videostreams in the our previous blog post. Here are live video stream links for the two divisions.
For anyone interested, this year's FTC West program booklet with team listings and more is online. For more information, check out the event website at FTCWest.org I'm still looking for a few more teams to demo and a field for Friday and Saturday March 10 & 11 for the FTC Demo at the FRC Regional "FIRST Steamworks" game at Del Mar Fairgrounds. It would be great to get two teams at a time for: 10-4 Friday and 8-12 Saturday Thank you to those that have volunteered for the FTC Demo so far:
I also need an FTC field preferably for the whole event. Can be setup anytime after 6PM on Wed and taken down at Noon on Saturday. There is plenty of room to set up any pit display or anything you want. We are located at the pit entry along with the college and sponsor tables, plenty of visibility. Should be a decent view of the FRC game as well. No meals are planned. There will be concession food available or you can bring your own. There may be even some opportunity to rotate in for a shift doing field reset for FRC on Friday. That's a lot of fun! I can provide one parking pass per team. Reply back with your availability, and I'll get you the parking pass. Thank you, Dan Glenn DanGlenn2050@gmail.com Chairman, San Diego FRC Regional Planning Committee Green.Griffins; 10092 http://www.sandiegoregional.com/ Fleet Science Center has invited us to see a FREE preview screening of Dream Big: Engineering Our World.
