San Diego FTC Coaches,
Each year Robotics Inspiring Science and Engineering, Inc (RISE) is able to offer outstanding graduating seniors in our San Diego FTC Region scholarships to colleges and universities of their choosing. Funding for the scholarships comes from RISE and Qualcomm. The scholarship budget varies each year based on program delivery costs through the season.
This year we are modifying the application process for these local scholarships so please read on to understand the new scholarship application process. If you have any questions please contact Koren Lilburn at [email protected] or txt 858-442-2398.
Please consider graduating seniors on your team(s) and invite only one student per team in your FTC program to apply for a local FTC scholarship. For example, if you are coach for one team then you can invite one student to apply for a local scholarship. If you are the coach for two teams, then you can invite one student from each team to apply for scholarship for a total of 2 scholarship applicants.
To invite the student to apply for a local FTC San Diego regional scholarship:
Understanding the important financial aid benefit that scholarships create for many students, please also encourage your seniors and juniors to explore school-based and national scholarship opportunities related to FIRST posted on the FIRST Scholarship Portal https://www.firstinspires.org/alumni/scholarships. These additional scholarships target FIRST students and each scholarship has its own application guideline based on the scholarship sponsors' requirement. The site is a useful and ever-changing resource. If you want to help your students find different ways to fund their educations, then encourage students to look at the FIRST Scholarship Portal a few times per season as new info is posted frequently.
If you have any questions about the local scholarships that we'll award at the SD FTC Regionals please get in touch with Koren Lilburn, [email protected] or text 858-442-2398.
Thanks for all you do to create exciting learning, competition, and higher education opportunities for our SD FTC students!

To invite the student to apply for a local FTC San Diego regional scholarship:
- You may use whatever criteria you choose to select the student you invite to apply for a scholarship. Some considerations may include: financial need, encouraging STEAM diversity, demonstrated team leadership, demonstrated teamwork, technical potential, most-improved student, educational encouragement, something else important to you as their coach.
- Provide your selected student the form to complete (attached) and instruct them to complete and return it to RISE by March 4, 2023.
- Local scholarship application forms will not be posted online. The only way students will receive an application is from you, their coach, inviting the student to apply for a scholarship and providing the student the attached form.
- If you invite a student to apply and they decline the scholarship opportunity, then you may invite a different student to apply.
- Students should return to their completed application and essay via email to [email protected] and [email protected] by 11:59 PM PST March 4, 2023 in .pdf format.
- You will also need to complete the attached Coach Referral Form and a write a Coach Letter of Recommendation to be returned to RISE by March 4, 2023 for the student(s) you nominate. The scholarship committee values your guidance and reads every Coach Letter of Recommendation.
- To simplify the process there is not a School Counselor recommendation form anymore.
- By 11:59 PM PST on March 4, 2023 RISE should have completed student application and an essay from the student you invited to apply and also your coach's recommendation form and coach's letter.
- All scholarship application materials should be sent in .pdf format via email to [email protected] and [email protected] by 11:59 PM Pacific Standard Time on Saturday, March 4, 2023.
- Scholarships of up to $1000/student will be awarded at the San Diego FTC Regional Championships in March. RISE issues the scholarship funds directly to the colleges or universities the selected students will attend in Fall 2023.
