Looking for more robotics fun? The 2017 MOONBOTS Challenge has just opened; it's the Google Lunar XPRIZE Challenge for kids! Five privately-funded teams from around the world are still in the Google Lunar XPRIZE competition to launch a robot to the moon and achieve a set of objectives by the end of 2017.
In the MOONBOTS Challenge, kids from 8-17 years old are invited to design, build, and program a parallel challenge. Phase 1 starts now with a video submission to answer, "What would you leave behind on the Moon?" On March 31, twelve finalist teams will be chosen from around the world for Phase 2 - these finalists will receive a robot kit and other materials to complete their robot and challenge design. In July, the 12 teams will have live online sessions with the MOONBOTS judges, and one team will win the Grand Prize of a trip to meet the winning Google Lunar XPRIZE team!
Past and current team members in the San Diego FTC League have been finalists and prize winners in MOONBOTS:
2012 MOONBOTS 2nd runner-up: Apollo 19
2010 MOONBOTS 2nd place: Shadowed Craters
We'd like to know if you find the SDFTC.org website useful, how do you access it, have you had trouble with it, and how can we make it better for the San Diego FTC Leagues - so please take our website survey:
36 San Diego League teams will advance from this coming weekend to the San Diego Regional Championship on Saturday Feb 25, and then just 4 teams will progress to the West Super-Regional Championship March 10-12 in Tacoma, WA. There is only two weeks between the San Diego Regional and the West S-R, so for anyone interested in the West S-R event, you can browse the information on their FTCWest.org website which is now back up after a brief update period this week. There is travel information and a link for nearby hotels which have discounts for people attending the West S-R (their reservation period deadline is Feb 12-13 so San Diego League teams won't know who is advancing yet, however if you're volunteering there or attending regardless, you could take advantage of the discount).
